Central Processing Unit (CPU) Removal
The initials mb, mean Mother Board
If you wish to read these, please be advised, I will Not be held responsible for any damage done by you or anyone else by following these directions. | Caution: Proceed at your own risk! |
I thought that I
would show you how easy it is to remove/replace a CPU. Please note: A CPU is a Central Porcessing Unit...do NOT mistake this for your tower. That is your computer, or your tower. What I am talking about is your Processor, aka brain, CPU, etc. I will be discussing is a socket 7, AMD-K6 233 ANR Microprocessor & Heat Sink. This is off of a Compaq Presario 4550 computer, it was 13 months old and mb died. Please make sure that you check to see what your specific MB (motherboard) will allow. |
Instructions: Ground yourself, if mb is sitting in a mb cradle--cradle meaning a piece of metal that will hold the mb, that in turn is fastened into the case--, touch both hands on the metal...to equalize your body current to match the board's. Or use a static band, buy at Radio Shack or anywhere really. |
Take off the clip that runs down the middle of the cpu, holding it in place. You might have to apply a bit of pressure, downward motion, to get it to release. |
<~spikey looking thing |
Next step is to
take the heat sink off, Unless it is glued onto the
CPU> if it's not, then follow this: In an upward motion, pulling gently. If it seems hard, then it is glued on, or could have some thermal tape holding it in place. In that case skip to next step. |
lever down position~> |
Notice the lever
on the left of this pic --it's brown. You will be
handling that lever in this step: The lever will be on one side, you apply a bit of pressure pushing it down & in slightly -- to release the
tension Push -- in gently, toward the cpu & pull that up, if it stops at half way point, that is normal. When it is in fully upward position, 90 degree angle the chip will come up a bit. |

Lift it straight up these pins are very Delicate. And make sure that you are still grounded. |
<~under side of CPU |
see this one corner where it is missing 1 pin? That's how you know which way to install the CPU in the socket, on your motherboard. Line it up to match the missing pin on your mb. |

And
here is what it looks like from the top side. ;) I hope this has helped you out. |
